Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus. It spreads through close contact. This includes caring for or living with an infected person.

Most cases of MERS occur in or near the Arabian Peninsula which includes the following countries:

  • Saudi Arabia
  • Yemen
  • Oman
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Kuwait
  • Qatar
  • Bahrain

There have been no cases of MERS in New York City.

If you get a fever, cough or shortness of breath within 14 days after traveling in the Arabian Peninsula, contact your health care provider and mention your recent travel.
