Most positions in New York City government are filled through civil service exams.

You can apply online for certain civil service exams. You can pay the exam fee by credit card or bank card. 

The CityStore does not sell Civil Service test study guides. Check your local bookstore for study materials.

You can get help at a Computer-Based Testing and Application Center (CTAC). Walk-ins are accepted, but you can also make an appointment using the Online Application System (OASys). To get started, search for Exam 1889.

Military veterans can get their test fee waived. Instructions are available online. You can request a waiver when you submit an exam application. You can do this online or by mail. Supporting documents must be sent by mail.

You will get a tentative score right after the exam. Once all exam scores are official, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) will post a list of everyone who passed. The list will be ordered by score.

The Civil Service IVR system only provides Transit Exam Results for candidates who:

  • Passed the exam
  • Are on the eligible list
