New Yorkers interested in creating a volunteer clean-up project in their neighborhood can borrow cleaning supplies and tools from the Department of Sanitation.

Sanitation lends brooms, shovels, rakes, and other equipment to community groups and block associations for community clean-up projects. You must return equipment when you are done using it.

Three weeks before the clean-up event, prepare a project plan that includes:

  • Desired event location
  • Work to be performed
  • Number of volunteers
  • Items to be cleaned
  • Cleaning tools needed
  • Rain date, and
  • Volunteer management plan

Once your plan is complete, you may then contact Sanitation by email or by phone for further assistance.
