The NYC Medical Debt Relief Program wipes out medical debt for low-income New Yorkers.
There is no application process for this program. If your debt has been relieved, you will get a letter from RIP Medical Debt notifying you.
This program is run by the City and RIP Medical Debt.
RIP Medical Debt:
- Buys medical debt from health care providers and hospitals in New York City
- Identifies who is eligible for relief
- Notifies people whose debt has been erased
Over three years, the program is expected to wipe out over $2 billion in medical debt.
Eligibility
You may receive medical debt relief through this program if you:
- Have an annual household income at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Line, or
- Have medical debt equal to 5% or more of your annual household income
